‘Tenaci, caparbie, convinte, infervorate.

           Questa raccolta di immagini istantanee e storie vuole celebrare e ri-attualizzare il fervore di spirito di alcune donne.

Sole e spesso non comprese, queste donne di cui sono raccolte le storie, hanno fatto delle loro convinzioni la propria ragione di vita,

fino a sacrificarla. Oggi le chiamiamo martiri. Ma prima della scelta del martirio c’ è stata un’ infanzia, ci sono state delle idee, dei

pensieri e delle azioni partorite alle volte con fatica, altre con spontaneità. Ognuna di loro aveva una famiglia da cui spesso è stata ripudiata.

Molte di loro hanno perso tutto per testimoniare ciò in cui credevano.

‘ Agiografie ’ celebra la loro memoria non soltanto come sante o martiri, ma soprattutto come donne, la cui forza è talmente vigorosa

che il loro ricordo non si è dissolto, nemmeno col passare di tutti questi anni. Serbiamo nel cuore le loro storie, in modo che ci diano

coraggio per affrontare i nostri dilemmi, che ci siano di ispirazione per le lotte  che stiamo combattendo, e che ci diano la forza di

rompere quelle catene che spesso ci limitano.

Questo piccolo breviario di fotografie istantanee è per loro.

Per ogni occhio cavato, per ogni dente strappato, per ogni torace dilaniato, per ogni freccia scoccata, per tutto questo amore, grazie.’

Ho raccolto le storie biografiche di dieci sante donne morte per martirio e ho rappresentato la storia di ognuna con un’unica fotografia

utilizzando il concetto del tableu-vivant. Ogni foto è scattata con la pellicola insta wide fuji e vuole racchiudere in una sola immagine la

vita, la storia e i processi del martirio, mi piaceva che la pellicola fuji rimandasse all’idea del santino votivo. Su di ogni foto ho fatto degli

interventi materici dove ho disegnato, cucito, bruciato e incollato materiali diversi per arricchire la storia di ognuna, soffermandomi

soprattutto sui dettagli di ogni martirio. Ogni foto è accompagnata da un breve testo che ne narra la storia.

Quello che mi ha spinto a lavorare su questa tematica non è un interesse religioso quanto storico e artistico legato alla simbologia

artistica, all’iconografia sacra e alle storie di queste donne. Ognuna di loro, in epoche dove le donne erano escluse da qualsiasi ambito

di aggregazione sociale e non avevano la minima valenza né come individui né come esseri pensanti, ha portato avanti le proprie idee

a costo della morte.

Ed è proprio questa resilienza, questa caparbietà che me le ha fatte amare.

 I femminicidi e gli orrori che tutt’oggi molte donne in molti paesi del mondo sono costrette a sopportare dal lato fisico, psicologico,

sociale e intellettuale. Potremmo mai riuscire, conoscendo i dettagli truci e cupi di queste martiri, perpetuando la memoria di queste

donne sante e martiri, a risparmiare altrettanti martiri in epoca moderna?

‘ Determined, stubborn, firm, inspired.

This collection of instantaneous images and stories wishes to celebrate and re-enact the fervour of spirit of some women.

In this collection of stories, these women – often lonely and misunderstood – turned their beliefs into a purpose in their life, even at

the cost of sacrificing it. Nowadays we call them martyrs. 

But before the choice of martyrdom there was childhood, there were ideas, thoughts and actions, sometimes born off of strain,

other times off of freedom. Each of them had a family and, often, they were disowned by it. 

Many of them lost everything to witness what they trusted in.

Hagiographies celebrates their memories not only as saints or martyrs, but above all as women, whose strength is so vigorous that

their memory has not dissolved, not even during all these years. Let us hold their stories in our hearts, so that they give us the courage

to face our concerns, and let them inspire us in our struggles, so that they can help us find the strength to break the chains which

often limit us.  This little breviary of photographs and snapshots is for them.

For every eye pulled out, for every torn tooth, for every shred chest, for every arrow struck, for all this love, thank you. ‘

I’ve collected ten saint’s biographies. All of these saints were woman and killed by martyrdom.

I tell the story of each saint only by one shot making use of the artistic concept of ‘ Tableu vivant’ .

Each photo is taken by instant wide fujifilm film. I wanted to enclose life and martyrdom process in a single and solitary image, I like that

each instant film refers to the idea of holy picture.

On each photo I made a lot of material interventions, drawing, sewing, burning and pasting different materials. I do that to improve and to

rich each story: the martyrdom’s details are the most important.

Every image is side by side with a text the tell the story.

What drove me to work on this thematic is not only a religious interest about these stories, but also a strong historical and artistic curiosity

about how the artistic symbolism and the sacred iconography talks about this women. In different and distant areas, where women were

excluded from the social aggregation, and they don’t  worth anything, neither as a human being, nor as women, each of them carried on

their ideas despite death. This willfulness to death, this resiliency to pain, that made me love them.

Everyday in too many countries too many women are suffering physic, psychological, intellectual and social violences.

Now, we know cruel and rough details of these stories.

Now, we know that many women in the past were killed because of their convictions .

May could we succeed to spare as much martyrdoms in our ‘ modern ‘ Time?
